Take a really good hard look at what your job is on a Team. Be frank and honest with yourself. If you’re looking for the truth, you’re going to find it. Take me for example. I’ve been the German Shephard in almost every team. I know a little bit about a lot of subject matters. I am okay at many things, an expert at few.
Armed with that knowledge I know myself well enough to know, I need a mixture of both of these gear types. We’re going to dive into these topics together and the best way to do that is keep your context squarely in mind. If what I say fits your context, note it down and move forward with it.
Gucci Gear Gaga!
There are so many things out now. We have amazing brands like Spiritus Systems who design, and update exisiting designs to amazing realities. Their kit is amongst my favorite, and their content is top notch. They give away excellent information on their YouTube channel. From their video on “Cold Weather Layering” to “Patrol Basics: How to Pack for a Patrol” all of that, and they make the kit they talk about. This is a resource I have no issues supporting.
This kit is purpose built to be modular and adapt to nearly any mission and the price reflects the time effort and energy they put into that task. But, what if you can’t afford the price of a single pouch from a top notch seller. What if your role on a Team doesn’t currently justify spending that much on kit?
Where Gucci Gear has a prime place is the door kicker or the combat roled person. Whoever is going to be in austere environments and needs a custom solution to their problems, this is the solution. Spend the money, spend the time researching and put your pieces together to accomplish that mission.
Enter, the Tax Dollar
You’ve already paid for it once, why not pay for it twice! Military surplus is the most slept on resource in the kit community. We have a huge resource that we’re barely tapping into. Surplus is often seen as “less than” or “defective.” While some of the items may have been deemed defective, For the most part, they are still very usable.
Your role on your Team may have you in a position where you just need to be hidden. The military has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the act of not being seen by enemy forces. You can access this for a huge discount. Go to your local Surplus store, have a look around. There are deals and steals on many things that will fit into your context.
Surplus has so many advantages to Gucci gear when we consider price point and longevity. Especially if we’re not afraid to use rattle can or Rite dye to solve camo mistakes that were made in the past. Looking at you UCP.
And like the Gucci Gear section I have a link to a local surplus store, for all the fun stuff and bundles of gear too, check out ODGG (Operational Detachment Guerilla Gang) If you tell them I sent you, they’ll have no clue what you’re talking about. They’re just local guys doing local guy things.
Conclusion
If you’re tasked with direct action, or direct action support. Gucci Gear is likely your go to. If you sprinkle in some Mil-Surp, you’re going to be saving money and accomplishing your mission.
If you simply need to have something that is function, something you know is going to stay in a ready box/bin until needed, and you’re not likely to be training monthly. Mil-Surp is your go to!
Go train with your gear either way!
God Bless You and Keep You!
